I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out to sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. – John Muir
I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river. – Zhuangzi
We all know that walking outdoors and spending time in natural environments is good for us. Many of us seek our recreation in the outdoor environment. There are a number of recreational walking groups that are active in the Sliabh Beagh area. Common Ground applauds that, and is offering some walks that complement what is already happening. The therapeutic aspect of the walks will be emphasised so that they become ecotherapeutic practices. This involves applying aspects of body therapy, mindfulness and psychology to the process of the walk, the walkers and the walking group. The walking groups will be facilitator/therapist led and potential participants will be assessed for suitability.
We welcome people who need support with getting out there because they lack confidence – sometimes this is down to a practical challenge after a period of illness or physical impairment. For others it is a psychological aspect that prevents them from going walking. This can be due to anxiety, depression or being isolated and not having the confidence to go out with ‘proper walkers.’ Because of the nature of these walks we welcome referrals from health professionals and also self-referrals.
Be part of making this group happen for yourself or others by commenting below, or fill out a Registration of Interest form – dates will be published later.
